Take 2!

So today my son has been at school for two weeks and I have been on long service leave for the same time. I don't go back to work until the first Monday in march. I'm hoping our son has settled into a routine and is not so exhausted by then. He is loving school though which is good.

In the weeks leading up to my leave I had written myself a very long list of things to do. And for some reason I had decided that I needed to do everything in this month.

Why? Who knows. I'm going to put it down to exhaustion, and probably, a degree of burn out from work. Whatever it was for some reason I seemed to think that I only had this month to get everything done.

I seem to have completely missed the fact that school goes all year. (And so on for several years). And of course the inevitable happened.

By the time I went on leave I had a chest infection requiring antibiotics and steroids (the joys of asthma). So I pretty much did nothing for the first week and a half. Then slowly started to get more with it. That was about when I realised that I had all year to do some of these things and could just take my time to work through things.

I am still trying to do too much though. I get more and more accident prone the more tired I am. My husband jokes that people will think that he's bashing me up with all the bruises. Sadly enough when I say I walked into the wall I mean it literally. (I do it at work too, much to their amusement.)

Last night I put my son to bed and then sat down to watch some tv, I woke up at the end of it. So I went to bed and slept for about 10 hours. I feel so much more with it today.

And I was so much more productive. So now I'm on "Take 2", so to speak. I'm going to write myself a new to do list and start over. Without the panic this time.

The Color Run

Today I achieved the first, of many, goals for this year. I did my first fun run!

Before I got pregnant with my son I classed myself as a runner, but hadn't actually done any runs. I lost all of my fitness during the pregnancy, and 5 years later I am still struggling.

When my son was about 2, my husband and I did the City 2 Surf. At the time most of my friends were like "why???". None of them ran. Now 3 do. Why didn't they decide to do this years ago?

So today my bestie and I did the Color Run. I went better than expected, but I still would have liked to do better.

I started nice and slow with a good pace, made it almost 2 kms and hit the first color station. Great fun! But I'm asthmatic. Even though I tried to hold my breathe I ended up inhaling a pretty blue cloud of dust.

And struggled! I've just gotten over a really nasty cough, so it didn't help. Each station just added to the damage until I dropped to a fast walk.

At the end I ended up doing under 9 min kilometers, the best I have achieved since I started running again last winter. So definitely an improvement.

Next time I'm going to take a mask to wear through the stations. And yes there will be a next time.

Contemplating a Spartan in April (7kms and obstacles through mud). Hopefully I can further improve my mileage in the next few weeks.

City Visit

I'm on four weeks long service at the moment. Mainly as my son has started school and I wanted to help him settle into a routine. Also because, to be frank, I am exhausted.

I haven't really done anything in the last week. Not like I thought I would, but then again I am exhausted.

Today I made the trip in to the city to pick up a race pack. My BFF and I are doing the Color Run on Sunday. It's my first fun run since I did the City 2 Surf several years ago.

While I was here I decided to take a trip I to the State Library. It's got to be like 15 years plus since I was in here. And it's somewhat different.

I had to ask how things work. The first librarian I got was obviously having a bad day, even though I had told her it was my first time in years, she got annoyed that I didn't have a library card.

Anyway we worked it out and I got my card and a very nice librarian to show me how to use the catalogue system an order books. It was paper requests last time I was here.

So I found a book and had a lovely 2 hrs there. Now I'm sitting at St James station typing this (missed my train and have to wait 15 mins). I need to get a timetable/ app for the trains.

I had such a lovely time, and they have so many more craft books that I haven't looked at that I plan on coming back. A lot!
